The Four Worst Pets, or… Why I Need New Neighbors

So… I may have written an email to animal control. Now, listen up… I am not an animal hater. We have a very adorable cat who you can follow on Twitter (@zim_flash). I don’t even just hate dogs… but Mr. Cabbage and I both very much love peace, quiet and the freedom to SLEEP! If we didn’t love sleep so much maybe we’d consider children… NAH! While talking to our realtor about our intention to sell, I fretted about how you even hold an open house with loud, boisterous animals sitting in the kitchen window of the townhouse next door scaring anyone who comes near our house. At our realtor’s suggestion my first step was emailing the insanely overpriced condo association who is always quick with their threats to tow cars or shutdown an Airbnb. Sadly, they didn’t want to take a stance on how many dogs is permissable or how much noise they are ok with them making. The president referred me to the city… which led me to animal control. They were so set on shutting down my Airbnb which helped me pay 7% of my mortgage last year when in the previous eight years I had only paid 13% COMBINED…. I highly recommend hosting an Airbnb if you can… but I digress. Hello, I am not sure what can be done, my neighbor has four dogs, which I have been told may be a violation of City […]

There Goes the Neighborhood

When your only debt is your mortgage is it normal to question selling on a daily or weekly basis? It used to be such a quiet neighborhood.  Mr. Cabbage and I are now greeted every single time we leave or arrive home – by our townhouse’s neighborhood watch made up of four large, ridiculously LOUD and obnoxious dogs who all live next door.  They awaken us every weekday and weekend morning and we used to LOVE sleeping in.  The dog’s owners leave their bags of poop in their front yard next to their stoop at times for the entire week until trash day.  It looks so classy.  The same lovely neighbors own both a piano and a drum set and some sort of speaker system that literally shakes our walls occasionally like an earthquake or a helicopter.   I know that if we did choose to sell our townhouse, that this neighbor would dissuede buyers.  Do people ask neighbors to clean up their mess and quiet their animals so we can sell and escape them?  As you might have guessed, we’re not friendly. Our community shut down our Airbnb that we were running very successfully after six months.  According to the Home Owners Association, temporary leases have to be a minimum of a month-to-month basis.  Our Airbnb was lovely and we were consecutively Superhosts AND we earned enough from it to throw a chunk at the mountain of mortgage debt.  The effort to flip the basement […]

Month Long Minimalist Game

Have you ever looked around your house and thought how did I get so much shit? And when am I gonna have time to go through it and get rid of junk? Have you heard of the Minimalists or the Minimalist Game? Check them out! In order to play the minimalist game, every day you find things to toss, sell, donate or giveaway. The idea is to downsize! The first day it’s one thing and the last day it’s 28. So for February we’ll be giving away 406 items! At the end of the month I’ll share pictures of what I got rid of and where the stuff went. Today is February 3rd, so it won’t take you long to catch up! Find six items and start there. Here’s how I started… One garbage bag with clothes for Goodwill that’s been sitting in the corner of my bedroom for a month Two old crusty pots and lids which were replaced with a new kitchen set on Black Friday Three intercom speakers from a very retro 1970s system. I tore them out and I now have three holes that will need drywall… one in my kitchen, one in my bedroom and one in my living room. It is still great progress though! I have been living with them for nine years – apparently in case they come back in style? WTF? I hope you’ll give the game a try with me. […]
